The railroad was able to bring supplies to the area for those looking to strike it rich. They also hauled the gold for the various companies mining it and charged a hefty price for doing so.

With the earnings that the Santa Fe railroad was making from the gold rush, they decided to expand their railway tracks into new territory. They faced many challenges getting them built along Raton Pass into New Mexico. There were simply too many hills and mountains to make this an easy job.

Between 1965 and 1945 Santa Fe had become the most profitable railway in the country. They started out with only 62 miles of track and had grown to more than 13,000 miles. As the years went by Santa Fe continued to be a very profitable company, yet they had many competitors to contend with as well. This bit into their profits and they decided in 1983 to merge with Southern Pacific.

The merger was never completed though as it was denied by the Interstate Commerce Commission. They felt that this merger would result in too many duplicate routes being in place by the railways. Many people were surprised when Santa Fe merged with one of its biggest competitors in 1996. Burlington Northern has always been well known for acquiring other railway companies. With this acquisition though their name took a change as well and became known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).

Yet both of these individual companies found that they were offering the same services, had similar goals, and wanted to offer the best possible training for their employees. They found they both had some strengths and some weaknesses but by joining forces they could emerge as the very best railway company in the world.

Today BNSF is the most profitable railway in the business as they are able to offer competitive rates and they have thousands of miles of train tracks to incorporate various routes. Diesel Versus Spark Engine Ignition

As you may already be aware of, diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines of the same power, resulting in much lower fuel usage. For an efficient turbo diesel, the average is 40% more miles per gallon. The higher compression ratio with diesel engines help to raise efficiency, but diesel fuel also contains around 15% more energy per unit volume than gas.

Diesel engines that are naturally aspirated are far more massive than gasoline engines of the same power for two reasons. First, it takes a larger capacity diesel engine than a gas engine to produce the same amount of power. Essentially, this is because the diesel can't operate as quickly. The rev limit is slower, because getting the correct fuel to air ratio into a diesel engine fast enough is more difficult than a gas engine. The second reason is due to the fact that a diesel engine needs to be stronger to withstand the higher combustion pressure needed for ignition.

Diesel engines also produce very little carbon monoxide as they burn the fuel in excess air except
at full loading capacity, where a full quantity of fuel is injected per cycle. They can however, produce a black soot from the exhaust, which consists of unburned carbon compounds.

Often times, this is caused by worn injectors, which don't atomize the fuel sufficiently enough, or a faulty management system that allows more fuel to be injected that can then be burned with the available air.

For commercial use that requires towing, diesel engines tend to have more desirable torque. Diesel engines tend to have their torque peak quite low in their speed range which provides smoother control over heavy loads when starting from rest, crucially allowing the engine to be given higher loads at low speeds than a gas engine.

The lack of an electrical ignition system in diesel engines improves the reliability. The high durability of diesel engines is also due to the overbuilt nature as well as the combustion cycle, which will create a less violent change in pressure when compared to a gasoline type spark ignition engine. Diesel fuel is also a better lubricant than gasoline, so it is less harmful to the oil film on piston rings and cylinder bores - making it routine for diesel engines to go 250,000 miles or more without having to be rebuilt.

For several reasons, diesel proves to be better than spark engine ignition. Diesel engines last a lot longer, they offer more torque, and they are also more reliable. They are also more expensive as well, although you get what you pay for. There have been various changes to the laws pertaining to the hours of service for truck drivers over the years. The most recent changes took place in April of 2007, and they were met with a great deal of controversy. The idea behind these new hours of service is to ensure all truck drivers get enough sleep and to keep the roads safe.

Yet for many truck drivers, the hours of operation have left them with having to split up their sleep time in order to accommodate their load times. In their opinion, this leaves them feeling more tired then the way the old hours of operation were. In many instances the hours of operation laws require the driver to get sleep when they aren’t tired, but they are out of hours.

A truck driver can legally drive for a maximum of eleven hours during any fourteen hour period of time. Once that eleventh hour has been reached, the driver must rest for a minimum of ten hours. In addition there is a weekly clock that the driver has to abide by as well. No truck driver can legally drive more than sixty hours over a period of one full week.

Each driver has to keep a daily log book that shows their hours of operation, sleep time, off duty time, and vehicle inspection time. If a truck driver is pulled over by law enforcement or pulled into a port, the log book can be reviewed. If the driver is in violation of the hours of operation they won’t be able to move their truck until they have had adequate hours of rest. They can also receive a hefty fine in order to help reduce the number of driver’s with such violations.

Any time a semi truck is involved in an accident, the log book is checked over to make sure they are in compliance with the hours of operation. If they aren’t, the driver will likely get a citation regardless of who was at fault for the accident. These penalties have quickly taught truck drivers and trucking companies that breaking the hours of operation laws just isn’t worth it.

The issue of these hours of operation continues to cause problems for the entire trucking industry. Drivers claim they aren’t able to make enough money due to the hours and there is a high rate of turnover in the business now. Many business owners have to charge more for hauling freight due to the time it takes to get it moved now. These costs are passed on to the merchant and ultimately to the consumers.

In July of 2007 the issue what taken before the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court struck down the option to return to the previous hours of operation laws that were implemented in 2005. The ruling was made because the judges felt the new hours of operation offer more safety to truck drivers and the public in general.

This is a debate that continues to get more support for both sides as time goes on. Choppers came into being in the 1960's and 1970's. They were the next step in motorcycle evolution after the "bobber". The bobber came about after American soldiers returned home from World War II. These riders remembered the motorcycles they had seen in Europe that were more lightweight and more exciting. Most hade been trained to work on motorcycles and automobiles in the service. They began to get together and talk about improvements.

To make the bike lighter, riders began removing or shortening the fenders. The front fender was usually removed completely, while the back fender was made short enough to just protect the passenger from mud and water thrown up by the rear tire. This is where the term bobber came from. Riders continued to make changes or customizing their bikes and eventually the "chopper" was born. Their original purpose was for dirt track racing.

The term chopper comes from the process of chopping. Riders began chopping off any part they felt was unnecessary. This included windshields, front fenders, big headlights, crash bars and big seats. The standard large footrests were replaced with forward-mounted foot pegs. The fuel tank was made smaller. This made the bike lighter.

Next, riders began raking the front end of their choppers so that the angle of the fork to the ground decreased allowing for an increase in the wheelbase. They also raised the handlebars and called them ape hangers.

The reasoning is that if you only pay $20,000 for your car you can bank the difference or invest the extra money to make it grow for you long term. This approach might be true. But my question is-------

Why would you want to do that?

There is not one BMW owner that I know who would rather drive an "ordinary" vehicle all of their lives in return for saying that they are not impressed or enjoy the benefits of owning a BMW. When was the last time you heard a BMW owner say, "Gee, I wish I had bought something cheaper"? If you have been on this planet for more than ten minutes you know that you will never hear anything that ridiculous.

And as for the money you would save by not buying a BMW, let's look at the trade-offs. Do you really want to trade a few extra "bucks" and a dull lifestyle for the lifetime thrill and excitement in your BMW. Can any amount of "invested money" make up for the boring years of driving just "the ordinary" car. I don't think so.

Current and future BMW owners beware.

There will always be those that look down on you because you made the decision to be "Special' instead of ordinary. Because you made the decision to work hard and reap the benefits of your labor. Because you made the decision to have a "lifestyle" not just a life. Because you made the decision to make your dreams come true instead of fearing to dream.

To all those who decide to deny themselves the passion of a BMW, let me ask you this. When you're 90 and on your deathbed with your life flashing before your eyes, do you really think that you will want to say " I'm glad I saved a few extra bucks by owning an ordinary car all my life". Or will you die with regret knowing that you could have had the "BMW Experience".

Honda's new Accord comes to market with newer styling that takes things to another level. Honda's previous generation of coupe was a great selling car, sporty yet knew when to keep it conservative. I previously tootled around in the sedan version and was further impressed with its creative construction, a crucial take no prisoners mission. To further add to an impressive sedan, the new Accord coupe would have to take a couple extra measures to win me over. And I tell you, it doesn't disappoint. I give you the lowdown on this under the radar ride.

I was fortunate to review an EX model with all the cake and cookies, it was the one trim I was gunning for. If I were to describe the exterior, it would be one of sleek, over the top, and trend setting, of course all in a good way. I just could not help but put the new Infiniti G37 and BMW 3 series coupe in the discussion. For up to $10k less, one could have a stunningly beautiful coupe in the Accord, and perform fantastically with some of the best. But don't get me wrong, the Infiniti and BMW are built and designed at the top of their class. Moreover, I would not feel bad about taking the Accord coupe over the higher priced guys. The body and windshield are more raked, the front end is more stealthier than it's sedan sibling. All in all, it was more sports car than the regular Joe Schmoe passenger car, which the last generation clearly was.

Boy is this car quick, the V6 powertrain is phenomenal and quick to respond to all of my pedal intervention. One important thing is that the car did not feel as heavy as the sedan, and this made drivability and stability out on the roadways more taught and interactive. I wasn't worried about having to accelerate further on the turns, the car handles like a dream. Interior quality is above par yet again, and has no significant issues. Everything was easy to reach and the seating is comfortable if not more supportive, it all fits into the sports coupe niche. The only negative would have to be getting into the back seat, while seating comfort is not the main attraction for any coupe, it did fit a little bit tighter than I liked it to.

Consequently, I knew the new Accord coupe would be on my best of expectations, but I came out of the testing with more of a fondness. It was truly a great alternative to some of the comparably priced cars in the market today, and will win over many buyers with it's head turning facade and Honda's tru-blue engineering and quality. I truly recommended this 2008 Honda Accord coupe to many aspiring sedan aficionados. A break from the common sedan...

Do Your Weekly Car Check

Every good car owner should check their car periodically to make sure it is running properly. Though there are lights on the dashboard to indicate any problems, it is much better to know a little bit about your car, and to keep an eye on the important fluids that are used to run the car. Everyone knows about putting enough gas in the car, but there are some simple steps that should be done about once a week. This is a very good thing to teach any teenager or other new car owner, especially one whose new car is over five years old.

First of all, make a habit of checking your fluids. The older the car the more frequent the checks should be, but at least make them once every two weeks. Having a regular schedule will help in this, for example, the first and fifteenth of every month. In this way, you will have to remember if you have just forgotten to make the check or if you have just done it. Today let's cover checking the oil.

The oil level is one of the most important fluids to check regularly. There is a long thin metal piece, call the dipstick, that slides into a compartment adjacent to the engine. Most dipsticks ended in a small circular, plastic coated ring that you can use to pull it out of its tube. Make sure you see the small hole the dipstick goes into so that you can replace it there to check the oil level. First, make sure the car is parked on a level surface and has been sitting for several hours before checking the oil. This is because the oil is used to lubricate the engine, and takes a while to settle down back into the bottom of the engine. Remove the dipstick, and wipe any existing oil off it using an old rag. Reinsert the dipstick back into its small hole, all the way down so the top of the dipstick is in its normal position. Pull it out once again and notice the light or dark brown liquid that coats the bottom part of the stick. You will notice that there will be markings on the dipstick, indicating low and full levels for the oil. Depending on your car they may have the words "full" and "add", or possibly just two notches or other notation.

Generally the fluid should be somewhere near, or possibly slightly over, the full line on the dipstick (the one higher up on the stick). If not, oil should be added to the car. For most cars, the amount of oil between the bottom mark and the full mark is one quart of oil. So, for example, if you are oil comes half way between the bottom and top marks, then you should add approximately one half quart of oil. Add that much oil, wait for a few moments, and then measure it once again. If the oil level is significantly below the bottom mark, add as much as necessary to bring it up to the top mark, and then have a mechanic look at your car for oil leaks.

In order to add oil to the car, there should be a small round cap that can be unscrewed, which hopefully has the word "oil" on it. If it is not clearly marked, ask a knowledgeable person where to add the oil in, for it is crucial to get the right opening. Simply unscrew the cap, add the oil (using an oil funnel if you wish to be neat), and then make sure you replace the cap securely.

Other fluids to check weekly include coolant level, windshield washer fluid, power steering fluid (if applicable), and brake fluid. Also, make a periodic check of tire pressure. If you've been feeling a shimmy in the steering wheel when you apply the brakes and possibly the brake pedal pumping up and down, even slightly, you may have one or more warped brake rotors.

Disc brake rotors, the part the brake pad contacts when the brakes are applied, run very hot. If you've ever watched an under the car shot of the front wheels on a race car, you've seen the rotors turn red and glow.

When driving on the street you seldom get the "glow" but the rotors can become hot enough to warp, especially if you drive through puddles of water or snow after making multiple stops and starts.

Brake pads are in constant contact with the rotors. If the driver has a foot on the brake pedal all the time the brakes wear out prematurely and the rotors will run hotter.

Tow vehicles and driving in the mountains, or on crooked roads where the brakes are used a lot, can also contribute to warped rotors, especially if there if water, slush or snow on the road.

If you experience a slight pul upon braking that can be an indicator of warped rotors or brake calipers that need rebuilding. A spongy feeling brake pedal can be caused by excessively hot rotors, which in turn can boil the fluid in the brake calipers. In later cars there is generally an indicator light that will warn of low brake fluid levels.

Regular drum and disc brake type brake fluid collects moisture and can cause problems with the entire braking system if not changed at the recommended times in the owner's manual. Silicone brake fluid doesn't pose the moisture collection problem but it doesn't mix with regular brake and necessitates a complete purge and refill of the brake fluids.

Brake problems can be dangerous and any problem should be checked out by a competent mechanic who is qualified on that type of car's braking system.

If it's a Chrysler, or a vehicle from another environment-friendly manufacturer, the problem is easily solved. Since 3rd March 2005, EU-Directive 2000/53/EG concerning the take-back of end-of-life vehicles has been implemented in the UK, through end-of-life vehicle legislation and its relevant provisions.

Under this legislation, a passenger vehicle with a maximum of nine seats, or a commercial vehicle with a maximum weight of 3.5 tonnes, that has been registered after 1st July 2002, may be returned for a free-of-charge take-back, provided that it fulfills the following criteria:

§ All significant components, such as the engine, chassis, bodywork, catalytic converter or electronic control unit are present in the vehicle

§ There is no waste in the vehicle

§ The vehicle is or was registered in a member state of the European Union for a minimum duration of one month

§ The vehicle registration documents are submitted with the vehicle

In order to achieve simple, eco-friendly disposal of end-of-life vehicles, Chrysler maintains a nationwide network of take-back stations. These will take back a used Chrysler free of charge, and provide a certificate of destruction. This confirms that the vehicle was properly disposed of, and enables the owner to legally deregister it. A certificate of destruction may only be issued by a certified Automotive Treatment Facility; a certified and authorized acceptance point; or a manufacturer-approved take-back station.

So what happens after a Chrysler take-back station receives a vehicle for end-of-life disposal? Firstly, it is de-polluted according to legal requirements, which ensure that all of the vehicle's operating fluids (e.g. oil, brake fluid) are removed and recycled. Subsequently the reusable parts and recoverable materials are dismantled. Recoverable materials such as glass, tires, and large plastic parts, etc. are fed into separate recycling systems. The remaining bodywork is shredded, separated into different categories, and, as far as possible, fed back into the economic cycle. It looks like the days of scrap-yards filled with rusting heaps of old vehicles are numbered!

Understanding The Origins of The Subaru Brand

It may come as a surprise to learn that Subaru and parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, can trace its roots back to the obscurely named "Aircraft Research Laboratory" founded by Chikuhei Nakijima in 1917. Previous to this, while enrolled at the Japanese naval academy, and at age 19, Nakijima became captivated by the notion of human flight, and the romance associated with taking to the skies on hearing of the Wright brother's first successful powered flight. This quickly led to Nakijima working on the production of aircraft for the Japanese navy. Ultimately less than satisfied with simply building aircraft, Nakijima became more and more absorbed in the development aspects of aircraft, culminating in leaving the Naval academy to found the aforementioned Aircraft Research Laboratory.

Very quickly this new company was renamed as the Nakijima Aircraft Co. Ltd., rapidly becoming one of Japan's leading aircraft design and manufacturing companies in the ensuing years leading up to, and including the period during World War II. Following the defeat of Japan in 1945, and the total collapse of the domestic aircraft industry, Nakijima Aircraft was renamed Fuji Sangyo Co. Ltd., and began the task of adapting design and production techniques learned from aircraft production into the manufacture of motor scooters and bus body building.

Reacting to the demand for cheap personal transport, in June 1946 Fuji Sangyo, after studying for six months a Powell Streamliner scooter (as used by American service personnel of the time) produced their own interpretation of this existing design. Called the Fuji Rabbit, it proved to be an instant success with the local population who appreciated its step-through design, low centre of gravity and satisfactory performance. Propulsion was by a 1.5kW 135cc air-cooled engine and made use of surplus wartime tail-wheels from military aircraft! It is also interesting to note that the Rabbit made it to the market a full six months prior to the very first Vespa scooter.

Changes to prevailing corporate law in 1950 forced Fuji Sangyo to separate into a further twelve autonomous companies. In 1953 Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) was formed as an aircraft manufacturing, maintenance and sales company through the combined investment of five of the original companies formed from the break-up of Fuji Sangyo. Two years later these five investors merged with the newly created FHI, beginning the modern era of FHI's business activities as we know today.

Early in 1954 the prototype of FHI's very first passenger car was produced, known creatively as the P-1. Then president of FHI Kenji Kita, made it a priority to come up with a dedicated name for the fledgling car making division of FHI, by conducting an inter-company poll.

Ultimately unsatisfied with the suggestions made, Kita chose instead to use a name dear to his own heart, and that of the Japanese people. For both the Chinese and Japanese, the cluster of six visible stars known as Pleiades in the west, is known by the name Subaru.

For the Japanese, literally translated, Subaru means "to gather together or to govern" and is sometimes translated as meaning "unity". It is interesting to note that FHI was created out of the merger of six different companies, demonstrating what an evocative name Subaru is for the Japanese.

The P-1 became the Subaru 1500, which ultimately failed to be a sales success for FHI for a variety of reasons, but in 1958 Subaru hit on the right mini-car formula for the masses with the Subaru 360. The 360 was a small four-seat car and went on to sell successfully for eleven years.
